One of the biggest trends seen today is people trying every way they can to save money. And it’s no wonder, with companies being downsized, employment uncertain, and prices still sky-high.

An advantage we have to help us save money is the internet. Here are four ways to use the internet to help you get the most for your dollar.

1. Check Out Price Comparison Websites

Whether you are planning to purchase a small appliance for your kitchen or a large investment like a car, you can search for reviews and price comparisons online. Even if I want to buy a book from Amazon, I check the reviews first before I put the money into it.

2. Subscribe to Coupon Blogs

Each day, I get several emails from different coupon blogs that I have subscribed to. These are kept current daily and give you the best deals on groceries and other items. Sometimes they show you where you can print coupons for particular products. Many of these blogs have already done the hard work for you in matching current store deals to newspaper and printed coupons that are available. You can save a lot of money and find deals that you wouldn’t have noticed by daily checking these blogs.

3. Participate in Forums or Blog Comments

Often, you can find like-minded people who are also trying to live frugally on various forums and blogs. It’s up to you how much time you want to spend chatting on-line. But if you keep an eye on these sites, you can pick up tips and ideas about saving money. You may have questions about a certain product or service and someone else in the discussion may have had an experience with it. They can give you good, first-hand advice.

4. Check Out Authority Review Sites

There are product review sites popping up all over the place. Some of these may be writing reviews without ever having used the product. Search for high authority websites that have been around for a while and have a high page rank. Read and see if they have actually tried the products and what they have to say about them.

Important to Remember

Remember that a deal isn’t a deal unless you wanted the item anyway! It’s easy to get carried away, even on couponing, and buy a bunch of things that you wouldn’t normally get or use. Sometimes you may even spend more than you normally would just because you had coupons. Use these frugal tips to spend wisely.

Helen’ Comments

Ebay and Kijiji may be used as well. Prices are compared and shipping costs are evaluated in to the deal. Buy and Sell and Free stuff sites on Facebook are handy places to look as well. Hopefully someone has started that group in your area. I have many in my own. It sure helps you feed and clothe a growing family reasonably. Check Facebook for a group near you.

Decorating your home and bath is one of the best things about home ownership. Being able to include small details like pillows and blankets and complete large tasks as well, such as painting the rooms a certain color or selecting your ideal furniture set is extremely important. There are many great things about being able to decorate your own home and finding the right tools to do so doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive.

Adding small details to your décor like luxury tissue box holders, pillows, and throws is a way to add your personality and personal interest to your home without spending a fortune. There are many ways to decorate frugally. Though some luxury tissue box holders and similar fare can be expensive, they are small pieces and they are still relatively affordable when compared to huge renovations. Though they are small these details add a great deal to the atmosphere of a home.

In addition to adding small touches like luxury tissue box holders and the like, another thing you can do is look for affordable ways of creating changes that are traditionally quite expensive. An example of this would be purchasing paint that is on discount. You can often find cans of paint at department stores that have been made up for customers who then rejected them. These paint cans are often discounted 70% or more from their regular price.

When it comes to actually doing the work, clearly the cheapest route is to do the painting yourself. There are many tools available on the market today to make do it yourself painting easier, such as painter’s tape. However, if you are certain that you can’t paint your own space you may be able to find a handyman looking for work who is willing to do it for much less than you expect.

Something else that should never been discounted is the effect that changing linens has on the overall atmosphere of a bedroom. Purchasing a new comforter and blanket set can drastically change the way your bedroom looks. Go with a drastically different color or style and you will probably be quite happy with the effects. Often, just changing out linens is enough to make the room seem like a totally different place. If you want to take it a step further, adding details like unique pillows and area rugs is another way to add to the effect.

Last, but not least, consider buying some of your decorative items used. Yard sales, flea markets, swap meets, and consignment shops are fabulous places to find unique additions for your home. You can often find items that are in close-to-new shape for a fraction of what they would have cost to begin with. The internet is also a great place to search for unique finds at low prices, there are many online classified ads and bidding sites that are set up specifically for this purpose.

Helen’s Comments

Speciality Linen & Bath stores often have sales, so getting the exact piece or item to complete the atmosphere you are trying to create can be a financially easy one too. I often pop into the thrift stores in town to see what things they have that catch my eye as well. Auction sales are intriguing to attend as another place to search for unique items for your home.

We live in a new world. The time for paying attention to our natural resources is now. We have woken to the realization that our world is not the inexhaustible support system we believed it to be.

Thankfully “going green” does not require extreme and costly changes. Making a significant difference in the worlds natural resources, only takes small decisions made one step at a time. We can decide to:

Recycle Reuse Restore Reduce

With these 4 words in mind we have a few of the most wonderful ideas, tips and secrets to present. Simple and affordable going green ideas. And, if you choose to implement any or all of these suggestions you can be assured you are contributing to the over all health of the earth now and toward a more sustainable living environment for our future generations.

1. Going Green by Changing Your Lights. If every household in the U.S. replaced just one light bulb from the standard incandescent to the highly energy efficient luminescent bulbs being promoted today we would

Save A national average of $600,000,000. a year in energy costs.

Save Enough energy to light more than 3,000,000 homes for one year.

Save Green house gases equivalent to the emissions given off from over 800,000 cars.

Save Significant amounts on your energy bill. My husband spent one day replacing all the bulbs in our home. Not totally convinced it would make that much of a difference on our bill I supported his efforts more for the conservation aspects (and because he had turned off the TV) rather than the money saving pitch.

Boy was I surprised when the next electric bill came,

it dropped approximately 20%! or about 10 cents per

hour!

This change in bulb has one characteristic that may take some time getting used to. When you first turn on the lights – they appear dingy due to the fact they need to warm up a bit before they are at peak – light up the room – performance. They also initially cost a bit more but the standard life span far outlasts the basic bulb – from months to years.

Another energy saving tip is to install dimmer switches. Years ago these dimmers did not provide any benefit other than creating ambient light in a room. Today they are designed to minimize your electric consumption as well.

2. Going Green by Choosing an Eco Friendly Floor. If you are planning to replace your floor with hard wood there are two options that are delightfully green, look beautiful, perform well, and cost less than most hard woods. Cork - Cork has come a long way from its original purpose of wine stopping.

It comes from the bark of a tree that can be harvested once every 10 years and does no damage to the tree at all. Like sheering a sheep! It’s typically sold in tile or sheet form and is easy to install. Because cork contains millions of air bubbles – it is comfortable to walk on and easier on the feet when standing for long periods of time in the kitchen. It is also hypoallergenic, absorbs sounds, and acts as a thermal insulator which means warmth on the feet.

There are fabulous color and grain options available today so be sure to shop around!

There are a few drawbacks to consider. Cork does need to be sealed to moisture protect and is not very resistant to fading or punctures however, it does bounce back well when a heavy blunt object is dropped on it.

The other floor covering option is Bamboo – bamboo is definitely more competitive if you need a harder wood floor. Harder than oak yet it is made from a fast growing Asian grass that matures in about 6 years. It can be refinished numerous times with dye-based stains. Very eco-friendly.

Bamboo also offers a wonderful variety of color, grain and style. Have fun looking for the color and grain of this beautiful hard wood option. Did I mention it’s priced lower than most oak options?

3. Going Green by Recycling or Restoring Your Furniture. Must you buy new furniture or can you refinish, restore, repaint or recycle?

Wonderful design projects can result from painting, restaining or reupholstering that piece that is dated or worn. The most exciting aspect of recycling furniture is the money saved.

Sandpaper, paint and associated supplies are relatively inexpensive. Door knobs, drawer pulls can really change up the look of that tired piece of furniture also with minimum expense. A picture says a thousand words especially in this case. Visit the web site listed below to see some fantastic examples of these furniture restoring options.

Design applications usually last about 10 years. The neutral – earthy colors we have been seeing so often has been around since the late 90′s so it’s on its way out. This year you will start seeing bold, bright colors being applied to accent walls, furniture and textures. So, don’t be afraid to experiment with color, fabric textures and brush techniques. This is the year for bold, bright and beautiful! Go for it.

Another idea you may want to entertain is a fantastic option to buy “slightly used” from your local Good Will or Salvation Army. With a bit of frugal redesign “know how” you can create remarkable results.

4. Going Green by Buying Energy Star Appliances. Energy Star is the U.S. Governments Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy Seal of approval system to confirm a products ability to avoid/limit greenhouse gases without sacrificing quality.

When you purchase an Energy Star item you can be assured you have a product that will reduce energy consumption and save you money when used in your home, guaranteed through the entire life span of the appliance.

2007 stats from energystar.gov reports that consumers “saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars – all while saving $16,000,000,000. (16 Billion) on their utility bills.

Wow – Good Job! Let’s keep up the good work!

Helen’s Comments

I agree that changing the bulbs in my house has drastically made a difference in my electrical bill. In my area of Ontario, in Canada, we are charged different rates for different times of the day and I am consciously aware of the electric usage of my house so that I’m turning appliances, and lights off at times to save on energy consumption.

I have lived in a concrete-floored house as well as a hardwood floored house. I choose the hardwood one over concrete for warmth in winter and coolness in summer. My sister has bamboo flooring in her house and she likes how it holds up to traffic. She likes the color of it and the added value to her house equity.

My parents built their furniture from items that you wouldn’t believe. My father used some seats out of a junk yard car and built a frame for each seat to make a pair of chairs. My mother then bought some upholstery fabric from the thrift shop and made covers for each chair. My father also made coffee and end tables out of an oak skid, joining the wood together to create a lovely design and then finishing the tables with varnish to the desired color he wanted. He created wool rugs from burlap bags and rug hoooked the design he created into the fabric. Quite industrious,… but that was long ago, 50 years or so,.. has our society forgotten how to make do with what we have or are we able to make do again. Too many goods are ending up in our landfill sites. I challenge you to create something rather than send it to the dump.

Energy Star appliances are important too I urge you to replace old appliances with newer ones. Namaste!

Luckily living frugally as a family doesn’t have to be all deprivation and denial – especially if you start to practice these living frugally tips now – before you have to. You can use these strategies now to start saving money and lowering your cost of living. Following these steps you will be on your way to being a rich family.

Check out these tips and get started as a frugal family. These frugal ideas are simple to follow.

1. Grow Your Own Food

While inexpensive is good, free is better – and nothing beats free vegetables. Growing your own garden will be a tremendous savings. And it can be something the whole family – including the kids – can get involved in. You don’t need a lot of space to do. And some communities, especially in cities, even have community gardens where you can take over a plot in a reclaimed vacant lot. You can also grow vegetables in large containers or buckets on a small deck or balcony.

If you don’t know much about gardening, take out some books from the library or check out Internet sources. And don’t forget your friends – you are bound to have one with a green thumb.

Gardening is not only easy, it’s fun. Your kids will love eating your veggies especially if they’ve help to grow them. You can have them help out not just the planting, but with the maintenance as well – weeding and watering.

2. Preserving

Another way to build your frugal family skills is to can or freeze the excess of your garden’s bounty. Not only will you save money in the summer, your frugality will extend into the winter. Don’t forget that you can even can and freeze soups, stews and meals. You can cook in bulk on one day and freeze the rest for meals throughout the month. This is a great way to save money as it ensures you always have something in the freezer to feed the family. This will help you avoid the temptation to order in or eat out when pressed for time.

If you really want to get into canning, again check out resources from your local library for how to do it right.

3. Back to the Land

Are you ready to be a farmer? If possible, consider getting chickens and raising your own eggs. Again this is a great things to do with children and just a few birds can provide your family with plenty of eggs — saving you the cost of buying them. And you can also turn your chickens into a small business – selling the excess eggs..(My girlfriend does this,.. the eggs taste great too!)

4. The Forgotten Art of Bartering.

Before money existed Jill Cavegirl traded Amy Cavegirl for things. Maybe it was a hunk of well cooked meat for a nice new strapless skin, but you get the idea. Today the barter economy is alive and well. Inventory your skills and see what you could trade for. If you can cut hair, you might want to offer your mechanic free haircuts in exchange for car repairs. If you’re a great baker, perhaps you can trade a batch of cookies a week for eggs from your neighbor with chickens.

You can also barter extra things you have. If you have unused furniture, fabric or clothes lying around, you could start swapping them instead of just donating them. If you’re looking to get a new piece of exercise equipment, instead of heading to the store, check out a site like Craigslist or a barter site. You may be able to trade something you don’t need – like grandma’s old bureau for that slightly used treadmill.

Places like eBay and Craigslist are also great places to sell items you don’t want or need. Instead of just throwing things out or donating them, check out these sites and see if you can make some extra cash – just be sure this goes into the savings account – not into buying more “junk”. (I have joined a Facebook group, in my area, that is into Buying/Selling and Freestuff- plenty of deals to be found!)

Being a frugal family doesn’t have to be hard. And the best part – the money you save will help your family build a strong foundation for wealth.

Helen’s Comments

Starter pots can be found at the Dollar store,..pick and choose your seeds for your tastes and growing area. Do your homework on growing a garden and it can de-stress you significantly by taking your mind away from worries of life and onto the task of living off the land. Walks in a wooded area can expose new harvests as well,.. mushrooms and edible plants, .. dandelions, Queen Anne’s lace and fiddleheads are a few I’ve found in my own backyard.

Freezing the produce is the easiest way for me to do preserving,. but you can decide which is best for you,.. Making home-made jams and pickles, can be rewarding as gifts to family and friends. I have done this too. Just use good ingredients,.. no preservatives as that would defeat the purpose of growing a healthy garden.

You just finished all the gift buying and giving for Christmas and here it is, time for Valentine’s Day already! If you have elementary school aged kids you know that you will most likely be expected to give out little Valentine’s Day gifts to all those who are part of your child’s life. Teachers, classroom aides, the bus driver–the list goes on and on. You also might need to hand out a few little gifts yourself. Co-workers, the boss, friends, your children. So many people, so little time (and money!). With a bit of adaptation, these fun and simple gifts would work for just about anyone on your list. So read on, and get busy creating some amazing yet frugal gifts!

Without further ado, here are some great frugal gift ideas.

Gifts in a Jar: Buy some small glass jars, about 8 ounces will do just fine, and fill them up with some candy or beverage mixes. Give with directions on how to prepare it and maybe a cute little Valentine’s Day mug too. Alternatively you could also use a mug and place the drink mix or candy in a bag and place it inside of the mug.

Gifts of Service: Why not make your son’s teacher a coupon for an hour of correcting homework for her or helping organize the next classroom party? Your stay at home mom sister would love three child free hours to go do some shopping for herself and have a nice quiet lunch with her husband. Your time is a precious to you but think how wonderful it would be to share it with others as well.

Balloons and Cards: A pretty pink and red Valentine’s Day balloon accompanied by a nice card that contains a special message will certainly be appreciated by anyone. If it’s a helium balloon, add a little bag of Valentine’s Day candy to the bottom to keep it weighted down.

Heart Shaped Cookies: Or brownies or fudge. Any sweet treat that can be cut with a heart-shaped cookie cutter will do. Just make up some of your favorite treats and prepare so as to get them in the shape of a heart. You could even make heart-shaped muffins or cupcakes by placing a marble in the pan to make the cupcake liner fold inwards, giving you a cute little heart (this only works well for regular size muffins, not the mini ones).

Helen’ Comments

Contents for the jars or glasses, that you purchase, can be found at the Dollar store in your area. Helium filled balloons and cards can also be found there as well. These types of gifts go well for the family at my house too,.. we just add special treats for each member,.. their favourite candy,.. my oldest daughter loves cinnamon hearts.

Gifts of service go well for family too,… an hour of time to assist with homework research,. to bake some personal favourite recipe,. to act as a chauffeur for your child and a few friends,. one weekend (I’ve done this a few times,,.. I have teenagers),… a personal massage,.. a foot rub,..or whatever you can think of to delight a family member!

1. Figure out which things that are important to you. Identify the items that you need and the items that you want to have. Remember that you should only buy things that are important and needed in your lifestyle.

2. Be sure that you spend your money first on basic needs like food, transportation, shelter, and clothing. These basic needs are important for your health and security and a worthwhile use of your money. They are the things that you cannot live without and should be allotted in your budget.

3. Organize a list of the things that you want to buy. Be sure that the items that you are buying are important to your basic needs. You can be satisfied with the things that you have now, as long as it is still useful and can accommodate your needs.

4. Avoid unwanted purchases by trying the item first before buying it. Make sure that the item is effective and worth your hard-earned dollars before your purchase it. Be careful of instances that you tend to buy things without even knowing its effectiveness and quality. Keep in mind that you always need to spend your money wisely on quality items that fit your budget.

5. Budget your money in advance. Be sure to make a plan first before spending your money. Make sure that the item you’re buying is truly a need at this time. Also, stock up on items at the end of the season. This is when prices are low and you can get substantial discounts.

6. Take time to compare the price of different items. Do not limit your options to just one store only. You may find the best item at a lower price elsewhere. Window-shop first rather than buying by impulse. Many stores carry the same items and offer lower prices with special deals. Also, don’t forget to look online.

7. You can save more money in your household by conserving electricity. Be sure to turn off appliances that are not in use. Buy the newer, energy-saving light bulbs that use 80% less energy and can save you more money in the long run.

Use these ideas for frugal living to keep more of your money. By applying these money saving tips, you’ll be in more control of your finances and better prepared for the future.

Michael talks about a way of life, a manner of thinking, one that appeals to some and not to others. You may not like this way of living but the state of the economy is causing people to have to take a look at their financial situation and the way they want and see themselves living. Sometimes it is an ‘eye-opener’ and has to be adopted in order to survive. Take heed of the advice here as it is basically the way I have survived all my life due to circumstances beyond my control. Comment and help others with ways that you have found that were helpful to you. Thanks in advance. Please share! Namaste!!!

With the price of gas sky rocketing, everyone is looking for gas saving tips and ideas. Most of know the basic ones like keep up with your cars regular maintenance, check the air pressure in your tires every two weeks – and refill if necessary, cut down on air condition usage when possible, etc. But when I recently read a news story about people having to choose between gas and food I did some research and came up with a more extensive list of gas saving and money saving tips. Here they are:

Walk. By doing this you save gas, save money, and get some exercise all at the same time. If you are just going to the corner store, or somewhere close, consider going for a walk.

Get a gas card. Some gas stations offer discounts for using their gas card or membership. There are also some department and grocery stores that offer discounts at the pump when you use their store membership cards. This can save you up 5% on gas costs. Just make sure the price of the gas, with the discount, is not more than the local discount gas station.

Check the web for gas price deals. Some web sites let you find the best deals on gas in your area, use them.

Consolidate your trips. If you can, consolidate all of your shorter trips into one longer trip, you will save gas and time. Create a to-do list of all errands for a given day and try to do them in a logical order. If you need to, map it out to avoid going back and forth.

Don’t fill up until the last quarter tank. If you do this, it will help stretch your gas money because you are hauling less weight as the tank nears empty. This also allows you to buy gas when and where gas prices are lowest.

Park in the first spot you find. When you wander all over the parking lot looking for that perfect parking space, you waste gas. SEE TIP NUMBER 1.

Stay away from store fronts. Even if there is a space open there, avoid it. You will save gas by avoiding being blocked in because of pedestrians and other vehicles.

Park in the shade. Gasoline will actually evaporates from your tank, and it does so faster when you park directly in the sun – winter or summer.

More Gas Saver TipsI also found a few more tips were more “hypothetical” but seemed worthwhile gas saving ideas as well, so I have included them.

The cheapest gas prices are statistically found on Wednesdays. Try to fill-up then.

Avoid rush hour. If you can stagger your work schedule to avoid it, great! If not, try going in early, and find a place to hang-out after work to wait out the traffic.

Gas up about three to four days before any holidays. This will save you money by avoiding the gas price spike.

Use a fuel injector cleaner regularly. This will save gas by allowing your car to properly vaporize the fuel and allow you to get better gas mileage.

Helen’s Comments

I avoid Idling my car in lineups as often as I can,… longer than ten seconds you use more gas than turning your engine off and on again.
